Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) persistently infects greater than 90% of the population, and, in the vast majority of cases, the infection remains benign for life.
To establish a persistent latent infection, EBV must access the memory B cell compartment and reside within long-lived peripheral B cells  where few viral gene products are expressed in order to escape immune detection.
